Summer Fun

It may be hot outside, but our drinks are cold inside.

Growing Pains. A good problem to have.

Eight months ago Chuuk Kay was a nice palapa with a few plastic tables and chairs, nice bathrooms, and very cool fishing rod lights over the bar.  Since then a loyal following, staff, flooring, furniture, a band, online message boards, a website, a blog, and a Facebook page have transformed everything.  Many bloggers also talk about Chuuk Kay.  Zina mentions the venue in her blog, Livin’ la Vida Floja.

“On weekends, the Band With No Name plays from 3-5 or 6. So those of us who can’t wait up for them to play at Fayne’s at 10:30pm, get to hear them while we are still awake.“
Just like any new hot restaurant, growing pains are a good problem to have.  Weekends, or “Fundays”, from 2pm – 6pm are the busiest time for Chuuk Kay.  The Band with No Name starts at 3pm and while it has always been busy on Sundays, we’ve been packed the last two. We are sorry some people were inconvenienced, but we’ve responded. We’ve added tables. We’ve added staff.  We’ve added a cash Beach Bar. And we are adding a new outdoor kitchen.

On Sunday’s we offer a snack menu and complimentary chilpachole. The full menu is available, just remember that while the band is playing, the place is full. Come for the fun, music and friends.  New friends and those who have been there to watch us grow.

Super Bowl Party at Chuuk Kay

Chuuk Kay Super Bowl

Chuuk Kay for the Super Bowl

It’s that time of year again. Super Bowl. The Pre-game party. The Game. The Post-game party.

All of it is the center of attention this week at Chuuk Kay. There are of course the flat screen tv’s in the palapas, but on Sunday February 6, the BIG screen will be ready for the BIG game.

Chuuk Kay History

Chuuk Kay Owner

Isla Mujeres New Hot Spot, Chuuk Kay!

How Chuuk Kay got it’s start

Leonel Povedano has always been interested in adventure water sports and fishing. His Island Boat Adventures business includes Santa Rosa Tours and Chuuk Kay Restaurant and Bar. Santa Rosa Tours is named after Leonel’s mother, Rosa Povedano.

Island Boat Adventures offers water excursions to tourists for fishing, snorkeling, and whale shark tours. Leonel did not always have a dream of opening a restaurant called Chuuk Kay. But that is exactly what happened. Almost by accident. While every step has been planned carefully and intentionally, it was not the original long-term goal.

Leonel had a friend from a small Yucatan town whose family was known for building palapas – those palm thatched roofs on Maya construction. He thought the site would be a nice place for his customers to wait for their boats or relax after fishing. A few plastic chairs and a cooler was the décor.

Six months after building the palapa, he decided to go beyond the small snacks and drinks and also upgraded the décor for a full restaurant. The beautiful wood flooring was installed and the walls painted yellow to match the color of the adventure boats. The fishing pole lights were installed over the bar to coordinate the concept.

Months later, we have Chuuk Kay. A growing restaurant business that now offers live music on the weekends, a full menu and drink specials. The staff is coordinated like a well-oiled machine ready to help you and make you feel welcome.

The name Chuuk Kay is directly translated as “Catch Fish” in Mayan. Chuuk is catch and Kay is fish. In practice, it is a reference to sport fishing where you catch and release fish.

Chuuk Kay has found a niche on the island. You can follow it Facebook or their website. However, whatever you do, come by and see for yourself.
